Frank Swaelen

Frank Swaelen (born March 23, 1930 in Antwerp , † December 23, 2007 there ) was a Belgian politician.

Career

Swaelen studied law at the Catholic University of Leuven . In 1968 he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP) . From 1971 to 1988 he was Mayor in Hove . In 1980 he became Minister of Defense, but in 1981 he resigned to become chairman of the CVP, later renamed CD&V . He held this office until 1988. From 1985 until his retirement from active politics in 1999, he was a Senator , from which he was Senate President from 1988 to 1999.
