Frank Windelband (born October 3, 1960 ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga , the highest East German football class. There he played exclusively for 1. FC Magdeburg .

Before Windelband came to 1. FC Magdeburg in 1975, he had received his first training as a soccer player in the small company sports community of Tractor in the Altmark community of Grieben . At FCM, he went through all age groups in the junior division and was part of the junior league team until 1979. As a junior player, he was part of the GDR junior national team, for which he played 16 international matches. For the 1979/80 season Windelband was nominated as a midfielder for the first time for the GDR league team of the FCM. He was also used immediately on the first day of play and played on the left midfield position. In this season he completed a total of six league point games. In the following season 1980/81 he had already won a regular place with 19 first division games and was also used in seven youth international games. The 1.70 m tall diaper band had his best years at FCM in the 1982/83 and 1983/84 seasons, when he played 45 of the 52 possible league games and was used both in midfield and in attack. In the following years he lost his regular place and was only used eight times in the league team in the 1987/88 season.

Between 1980 and 1986 Windelband played seven games with the FCM in the European cup competitions. His personal highlights were the games against AC Turin and FC Barcelona . He won four European Cup games, including the 1-0 win against AC Turin in 1980 and the 1-0 win against Athletic Bilbao in 1986, in which he scored the winning goal, three games were lost.

After the 1987/88 season, Windelband ended his competitive sports career at the age of 27. He played his last competitive game for 1. FC Magdeburg with the league point game 1. FCM - Hallescher FC Chemie (2-0) on March 26, 1988. As a recreational footballer, he went to third division Kali Wolmirstedt for one season. In 1989 he moved to where the second-rate DDR-Liga playing BSG Motor Schönebeck , where he finally ended his career as an active football player. He later became a coach at 1. FC Magdeburg, who appointed him assistant coach of the 1st team in 2005. After the 2009/10 season, Frank Windelband retired from the FCM coaching staff for professional reasons. In May 2011 he took over the training of the Magdeburg national league club VfB Ottersleben, but returned for the 2012/13 season as assistant coach of the 1st team to 1. FC Magdeburg.
