The Frankensiedlung Nithrindorp is a building project for the reconstruction of an early medieval Frankish settlement.

The area of the Frankensiedlung is located above the Ahr valley , between Birresdorf and Nierendorf (first mentioned as Nithrindorp) in the municipality of Grafschaft (Rhineland) .

According to its own information, the aim of the association is to set up an open-air museum that is as interactive as possible, in which everyday life for those in the 5th to 8th century Franks living in the region should be able to be experienced and experienced. To this end, a village structure is being built, as was common at that time. The visitors to the settlement should get an impression of the way of life of the 'simple' rural population. Insights into the craft as well as into agriculture and the cultural life of the time should be offered.

Overview of the garden area

On an area of around 1.5 hectares there are currently around 50 vegetable patches, two vineyards planted with historical grape varieties, a hop garden, herb garden, “magic plant garden”, a grain field, clay oven, apiaries, ceremonial area and tool shed as well as several biotopes (pond, orchards , Flower meadows, dry grasslands, etc.). The construction of the first historic building is scheduled to begin in 2021.

In addition to the museums, ecological and educational aspects are a focus of the project. As a recognized sponsor of youth welfare, the association u. a. with Aktion Mensch and organizes children's camps and generational meetings.

In 2018, a solidarity agriculture project (SoLaWi) based on the concept of permaculture started in the Frankensiedlung .

There are cooperations with the Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation Germany and the youth aid association of the Ahrweiler district .

Opponents of the project founded the community of interests against a Franconian settlement . The initiators collected over 400 signatures against the implementation.

In June 2020, the citizens' initiative Rettet die Frankensiedlung! , which accuses the municipal administration of wanting to torpedo the project by "disproportionate requirements and commissioning of more and more new, diverse reports at the expense of the sponsoring association" and started a petition to preserve the Frankensiedlung.
