history

The Franklin River got its name during the Vancouver Island Discovery Expedition in 1864. The river was named after the British knight Selim Franklin, who was chairman of the expedition committee. However, his company was already operating on Vancouver Island in 1858. In 1911 Julius Bloedel, the agent of the settlers, and the Bloedel Stewart Welch Company began buying land on Vancouver Island for the purpose of logging. One of the largest logging operations in the world took place at their location on the Franklin River. Later in 1938, British Columbia became the first company to plant seedlings to reforest the deforested areas.
