Building description and history

Originally the village of Oschätze belonged to the Würdenhain rule . While the Würdenhain Castle was destroyed by the order of the Saxon Elector in the middle of the 15th century and the lands were annexed to the rule of Mühlberg , the church remained with Würdenhain .

In 1686 a branch church was built in Oschätze . The half-timbered building , which looked similar to the original mother church in Würdenhain and was also dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria , was demolished in 1908 and replaced by a new building in the same year. Kröbeln and Kosilenzien, where churches are also located, had already been spun off as an independent parish after the Reformation .

The hall church is a neo-baroque , plastered solid building with a three-sided east end. To the west of the nave is a square church tower with a tail hood , tower clock and weather vane . The construction company Nicklisch & Mattheus in Liebenwerda carried out the new building .

In 2016 Oschätze belonged to the Prösen parish .

The interior of the church is characterized by a vaulted wooden ceiling and a horseshoe gallery .

In the church there is a winged altar from the 15th century , in the middle shrine of which Mary with child can be seen. Several saints are depicted on the wings, which are divided into two zones. The backs of the wings are also painted. Other pieces of equipment include a wooden pulpit from the 17th century and a late Gothic font .

The old half-timbered church already had an organ from the year 1844 and built by the Meissen master organ builder Friedrich Pfützner. Today's organ has a pneumatic cone chest , two manuals and seven registers . This was created in 1908 by the Liebenwerda organ builder Arno Voigt (op. 8).

The bells of the church had to be removed in both world wars and given for armament purposes. Today's bell is from 1957. It has been ringing automatically since 2007.
