František Lexa

František Lexa (born April 5, 1876 in Pardubice , † February 13, 1960 in Prague ) was a Czech Egyptologist . He was the founder of Egyptology in Czechoslovakia .

life and work

After graduating from high school, Lexa studied mathematics, physics, philosophy and psychology in Prague from 1895 to 1900 (1903 Dr. phil.). Lexa taught from 1901 to 1906 at the grammar school in Hradec Králové and learned the Egyptian language . In 1907/08 he received a scholarship and studied Egyptology in Berlin and Strasbourg . In 1919 Lexa qualified as a professor at the Charles University in the Czech Republic for Egyptology ( O poměru ducha, duše a těla u Egypťanů Staré říše ) and was appointed private lecturer. In 1922 he was appointed associate professor there and in 1927 full professor of Egyptology. In 1925, on his initiative, an Egyptological seminar was set up at Charles University in the Czech Republic, and he was appointed to head it. Since 1952 he was a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. In autumn 1958 he became the first director of the Czechoslovak Egyptological Institute of Charles University in Prague.

Lexa's major works are dedicated to the Egyptian religion , magic and linguistics. Lexa was the first to translate ancient Egyptian literature into Czech.

Lexa's students included Jaroslav Černý (1898–1970) and Zbyněk Žába (1917–1971) as well as his daughter Irena Lexová, who did her doctorate with him on ancient Egyptian dances ( O staroegyptském tanci . Prague 1930).
