The French Wikipedia ( Wikipédia francophone, Wikipédia en français ) is the French-language edition of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia .
It was founded on March 23, 2001 and is considered the fifth largest Wikipedia after the English and German language versions as well as the Swedish and Cebuano- language versions , which have grown rapidly thanks to bot support . Within the Romance language family , the French Wikipedia language version is the largest Wikipedia language version in terms of number of articles, with over 2 million articles ahead of the Italian and Spanish .
Milestones
On September 21, 2010 at 6:54 am, the nominal one millionth article appeared with a contribution about the Swiss-Canadian OMI priest Louis Babel (1826-1912).
On July 8, 2018, the two millionth article was created.
Wikimedia
In France there is Wikimédia France as a “local chapter” of the Wikimedia movement, founded on October 23, 2004 in Paris. Today's statutes are dated January 27, 2011. Rémi Mathis has been the chairman since 2012.
There is also a chapter in two partly French-speaking countries, Switzerland (Wikimedia CH) and Canada (Wikimedia Canada).
Legal disputes
The article about the military radio station Pierre-sur-Haute led in March / April 2013 to a dispute with the French domestic secret service . He had tried to have the article deleted first via the Wikimedia Foundation , and after the latter had not complied with the request, asked one of the volunteer administrators of Wikipedia to delete the article under threat of criminal charges. After completing the deletion, the item was restored by a non-French administrator. As a result, the article received special attention in accordance with the Streisand effect .

Although the majority of the articles are written by residents of France, the French Wikipedia claims to be international as well as the English. In this sense, the French Wikipedia sees itself as an institution of the Francophonie . A large number of the contributions are written by Canadians, Belgians, Swiss, Moroccans and citizens from the rest of Francophone Africa .
