Beginnings

The Swedish language Wikipedia was set up on May 3, 2001 and initially developed only weakly ( copy of the first front page ). Not until the end of November 2002 was there a significant increase, and the number of articles increased from 523 to around 3,000 articles at the end of the year. On December 1st, the servers were converted to the PHP scripting language . In February 2003, the hundredth user was registered.

Since then, the interest in this project has increased more and more, also due to the international integration. In early 2004, around 100 new articles were written per day, double that of the same period in 2003. In 2005, the 5000th user was registered and the dictionary received between 150 and 200 new articles every day. At the beginning of 2006 (January 11th) the number of users doubled.

Strong growth through bots from 2013

Since August 12, 2013, Swedish Wikipedia has been the fourth largest Wikipedia language version in terms of number of articles, after the number of articles exceeded that of the Russian , Spanish , Italian and French language versions within a few days . By then, over 500,000 articles had already been created automatically through the use of bots . Similar to the use of the bot in the Dutch language version , this mainly concerned new plants in the field of biology, but also some geographical items (e.g. Swedish lakes). At the end of July 2014, the number of articles on the Dutch-language Wikipedia was exceeded with around 1.78 million articles.

The Swedish language Wikipedia reached the mark of 500,000 articles on September 27, 2012 and the mark of one million articles on June 15, 2013. As of September 6, 2015, the encyclopedia consists of over 2 million articles , and since April 2016 of over 3 million articles, mostly created by the Lsjbot computer program . As of February 15, 2017, the Swedish language Wikipedia had 3,782,684 articles.

In June 2014, the Swedish-language Wikipedia contained 66 percent bot-generated articles; in May 2016 it was already 83 percent of the articles.

Since November 2016 Lsjbot is no longer used in the Swedish Wikipedia.

In 2005 the Swedish language Wikipedia was named the second most useful website in Sweden by Internetworld newspaper . It was behind Eniro and in front of the Swedish National Encyclopedia on the Internet .

In a study carried out by several experts on behalf of the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet , the Swedish Wikipedia received good marks. The experts assessed the quality of articles using nine technical terms, with the articles taken from three Internet-based reference works: Nationalenzyklopädie, Wikipedia and Susning.nu . The experts had no way of assigning the articles to the individual lexicons and assessed the truthfulness and topicality of the information contained. When the study was published in the culture section of the newspaper on March 30, 2006, Swedish Wikipedia had the best grade in three cases, came second in six other cases and was never given the worst grade. The following nine articles were examined: Refugee, Stella McCartney, Bear Quartet, Scientology, The Face of Mohammed, Reality TV, Homer, Cubism and Slobodan Milošević.

Skanwiki

The Swedish Wikipedia works with the Danish language Wikipedia and the two Norwegian Wikipedias within the transnational project Skanwiki . An example of this collaboration is the presentation of the “Scandinavian article of the day” on the main page. In a rotation principle, a different article worth reading is presented daily in Danish (Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays), Bokmål (Wednesdays and Sundays) or Nynorsk (Tuesdays and Fridays), made possible by mutual understandability within the closely related Scandinavian languages .

Wikimedia

The Swedish-language Wikipedia and all other language versions of the free Internet encyclopedia are operated by the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco, USA. The Wikimedia Sverige association was founded on October 20, 2007 and recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation as a local section of the Wikimedia movement in December 2007.
