The Dutch language Wikipedia ( Dutch Nederlandstalige Wikipedia ) is the Wikipedia in Dutch . This language version was set up on June 19, 2001, making it one of the oldest.

History and statistics

Main page in June 2008

According to official statistics from Wikimedia, there were three articles in August 2001. The 1,000 article mark was reached in April 2002, the 100,000 article mark in January 2006. In January 2008 the figure was 404,000. Of these articles, 84 percent consisted of more than half a kilobyte, which is one of the highest values in the language versions. On June 19, 2011 - just ten years after it was set up - it hit the 700,000 item mark.

Article growth in the eight largest Wikipedia language versions (without Cebuan ), the Dutch Wikipedia in green.

In January 2008, 328 Wikipedians made more than 100 changes to the Dutch Wikipedia (so-called very active Wikipedians). The establishment of the Vereniging Wikimedia Nederland in June 2006 does not seem to have any impact on the statistics. A noticeable drop in the number of new Wikipedians in February 2007, from 545 to 327.

Use of bots

In phases, the number of articles increased by leaps and bounds due to the use of several bots . In May 2006, the use of a bot generated 35,000 articles about French municipalities within 6 weeks. Between October 20, 2011 and April 20, 2013 the number of articles doubled from 768,520 to 1,548,591 articles. That corresponded to 780,071 new articles in about 18 months, or an average of about 1420 new articles daily (sometimes even 10,000 articles daily), while in "normal" times there were about 250 to 300 new articles daily (for comparison: on the German-language Wikipedia in March 2016 it was around 350 per day). On December 17, 2011, the millionth article was created with an entry about the Hungarian handball player Antal Újváry (1907–1967). On March 31, 2013, the Dutch-language Wikipedia overtook the French-language version with around 1,369,000 articles, making it the third largest Wikipedia in terms of number of articles. On 14./15. In June 2013, the Dutch-language Wikipedia overtook the German-language Wikipedia with around 1,595,000 articles, making it the second largest after the English-language Wikipedia . At the end of July 2014, the Dutch- language Wikipedia was overtaken by the Swedish-language Wikipedia , in which case numerous bot-generated new systems had caused a surge in the number of articles. Since February 2015, the German-language Wikipedia has again had more articles than the Dutch-language one; in January 2016, the cebuano-language Wikipedia also overtook the Dutch-language Wikipedia in terms of the number of articles and in September 2017 the French-language one, so that the Dutch-language Wikipedia now ranks 6th .

The rapid growth in articles is mainly caused by bots that were started from the Dutch "animal project" with the aim of generating a separate article for each living being (at the beginning of May almost 700,000 article stubs in the Dutch category "Wikipedia: Biology stubs"). The Dutch language Wikipedia now contains more bot-generated articles than users created; in June 2014 59% of the articles were bot-generated.

Significance for the language area

At Multiscope.nl , the Dutch-language Wikipedia took third place among the websites in the Netherlands in October 2006. She received a school grade of 8.1 (a 10 would be the highest), only Google.nl and its e-mail service received a slightly better rating . After Wikipedia came the mortgage site funda.nl and Bertelsmann's mail order nl.bol.com .

Of the most important printed encyclopedias in the Netherlands, only the Winkler Prins remains, which was last published in 1990–1993. In 1997, the publisher behind it entered into a cooperation with Encarta from Microsoft .

Internal and special features

Control of Wikipedia Vandalism Starting in Schools (August 2010)

The school vandalism on the Dutch Wikipedia was felt to be so rampant that administrators blocked entire schools from accessing Wikipedia using IPs . The internet coordinator of an affected school in Vlaardingen , Frits Albregt, regretted a newspaper that they could not identify a guilty student. A code of conduct with regard to Wikipedia is dealt with separately in the classes. Community officials were also suspected of vandalism; someone from a computer in the municipality of Waalwijk put insults against Princess Maxima in the relevant article.

Instead of the article chapters “Individual references” and “Literature”, the articles on the Dutch-language Wikipedia usually only have a common rubric called Bronnen, noten en / of referenties (sources, notes and / or references). It lists literature, and more rarely individual references are given in the form of a footnote.

Administrators , called "moderators" in the Dutch Wikipedia, lose their extended rights if they have made fewer than 50 changes within twelve months.

Wikimedia movement

Wikimedia Conferentie Nederland 2011 in Utrecht

The operator of the Dutch language Wikipedia and all other language versions is the Wikimedia Foundation in the United States .

Vereniging Wikimedia Nederland (VWN), a non-profit association , has existed in the Netherlands since June 18, 2006 (first general meeting) . At the same time, a foundation, Stichting Wikimedia Nederland , was set up to deal with the disagreement over whether to set up an association or a foundation. However, the foundation is not active.

The VWN association is recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation as a local section of the Wikimedia movement (“Chapter”) and has its office in Utrecht . Since 2007, a Wikimedia-Conferentie Nederland has been held in the last quarter of the year (with the exception of 2009). In addition to websites and a wiki, the association also has a newsletter (Nieuwsbrief). For the first time in 2010 the VWN organized the photo competition Wiki Loves Monuments, in which the aim was to take photos of rijksmonumenten (national monuments). In 2011, several other regional associations took over the concept and turned Wiki Loves Monuments into a Europe-wide campaign.

In Flanders (Belgium), where a quarter of all Dutch speakers live, an association is still being considered.
