Verdelet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Verdelet is a white wine variety newly bred by the French breeder Albert Seibel at the beginning of the 20th century . It is a cross between Seibel 5455 and Seibel 4938 and belongs to the large family of Seibel vines . Between 1888 and the early 1930s, Seibel bred countless interspecific grape varieties in the fight against phylloxera . It is an extremely complex breed in which genes from the wild grapes Vitis labrusca , Vitis rupestris , Vitis aestivalis , Vitis cinerea , Vitis berlandieri and Vitis vinifera are present. The white wines of the variety are quite neutral but somewhat unpleasant in taste due to the influence of American wild grapes (→ Fox tone ).

Due to its early ripeness, the grape variety is found in growing areas with a cool climate. In France , it was valued as a table grape because of its beautiful grapes , although the taste of the berries does not come close to that of Gutedel. Their cultivation was therefore abandoned in France. In Germany, however, it is still cultivated to a limited extent. In some growing areas of the United States, however, it is still grown (→ Viticulture in Arkansas ) and it can also be found in Canada.

Synonym: Breeding line number Seibel 9110. In addition, the variety is known under the names Verdelet blanc, Verdelette (in Canada) and White Early

Descent: Plantet (vulgo Seibel 5455) x Seibel 4938.Seibel 4938 is itself a cross of the varieties Seibel 880 x Seibel 2718.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The light yellow-green young leaves are only slightly hairy.
  • The leaves are three-lobed and slightly curved. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set very closely compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized and has dense berries. The slightly elongated berries are also medium-sized and pale white in color.

The medium-late growing grape variety ripens approx. 5 - 6 days after the Gutedel and is therefore early ripening within the white grape varieties, so that it can ripen in cool locations. The variety is very sensitive to downy mildew , so the vines must be treated at least 3 times a year.
