Plan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Plantet is a red wine variety . The new breed was created under the breed number S 5455, which was originally described as a cross between the Seibel vines S 5163 and S 880. It is now known that it is a cross between Seibel 4461 and a pre-cross between Vitis berlandieri and Jacquez.

The hybrid grape was crossed by the French breeder Albert Seibel , who from 1888 to the 1930s bred numerous interspecific grape varieties in the fight against phylloxera . It is one of the better of the hybrid vines and was very successful in France until the 1950s. At the best of times, almost 28,000 hectares of vineyards were planted with the Plantet variety in France alone. Despite the general ban on hybrid vines by the EU, the Plantet vine was still tolerated, so that in the 1998 survey, at least 2,198 hectares of planted vineyards were determined. According to a decree of April 18, 2008, the grape variety is again one of the officially approved grape varieties for commercial cultivation, since the genome of the plant contains parts of the noble grape Vitis vinifera . In 2007 the area under vines was 1,170 hectares.

The early ripening and vigorous variety is fungus-resistant ( powdery mildew , downy mildew of the grapevine and gray mold rot ) and very frost-resistant. This explains their popularity on the North American east coast in the state of New York (→ Viticulture in New York ). The largest stocks in France are found in the colder climate of the Loire . The Plantet variety delivers dark red wines with a more or less intense raspberry aroma. For the European taste, this aroma is rather unpleasant.

Because of its good fungus resistance, the variety came back into focus. There is again a trial cultivation in Switzerland. Pierre Landot used the variety to breed Landal Noir .
