Landal Noir

Landal Noir (or Landal for short) is a red wine variety bred at the beginning of the 20th century by the French breeder Pierre Landot (1900–1942) . It is a cross between Seibel 5455 and Seibel 8216. Between 1929 and the early 1940s, Landot bred a large number of interspecific grape varieties in the fight against phylloxera in Conzieu in the Ain department . It is an extremely complex breed in which genes from the wild grapes Vitis labrusca , Vitis riparia , Vitis rupestris , Vitis aestivalis , Vitis cinerea , Vitis berlandieri and Vitis vinifera are present. The red wines of the variety are quite strong but have a somewhat unpleasant taste due to the influence of American wild vines (→ Fox tone ).

Due to its early ripeness, the grape variety is found in growing areas with a cool climate. Their cultivation in France is therefore limited to parts of the Loire valley and Savoie . It is also grown in some growing areas of the United States, and it can also be found in New Zealand. Smallest stocks are known in Switzerland (0.07 hectares, status 2009, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG).

Pierre Landot used the variety to cross the red variety Landot Noir .

Descent: Plantet (vulgo Seibel 5455) x Seibel 8216.Seibel 8216 is itself a cross of the varieties Seibel 5410 x Seibel 5001.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy like a cobweb. The bronze-colored young leaves are hairless.
  • The leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is open in a V-shape. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set very closely compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized and has loose berries. The slightly elongated berries are small and black-blue in color.

The medium-late growing grape variety ripens approx. 5 - 6 days after the Gutedel and is therefore early ripening within the red grape varieties, so that it can mature in cool locations. The variety is sensitive to downy mildew and powdery mildew , so the vines must be treated at least once or twice a year.
