Franz-Ferdinand Nentwig

Franz-Ferdinand Nentwig (born August 23, 1923 in Duisburg ; † July 14, 2015 in Lisbon ) was a German opera singer with a bass-baritone voice and was particularly successful in the Wagner field. Before his opera career he worked as an assistant director and sculptor.

His training as a singer took place at the music academies in Detmold, Essen and Hamburg. In 1962 he made his debut in Bielefeld in his role as Ottokar in Freischütz. He then moved to Freiburg (1963) and Ulm (1969). He had a permanent engagement at the State Opera in Hanover from 1973 to 76, and was a regular guest there until 1983. In 1977 he became a member of the ensemble of the Hamburg State Opera, with which u. a. also went on a tour of Japan (1984). Further guest appearances have taken him to Venice (1983), Barcelona (1986), Salzburg (1987/88), Turin (1987), San Francisco (1987), Brussels (1988), Warsaw (1989) and Rotterdam (1989). In addition, he was a guest u. a. at the Vienna State Opera , Opera de Paris , Opera-Comique in Paris, Opera of Monte Carlo, Brussels and the Metropolitan Opera in New York where he a. a. sang at the side of Placido Domingo . Overall he sang at the Met from 1980 to 1988.

Nentwig was married to the singer Elena Dumitrescu-Nentwig.
