Franz is an impact crater on the northeastern front of the moon , between Mare Tranquillitatis and Sinus Amoris . The crater is very badly eroded, the interior was flooded by the lavas of the adjacent mare and is therefore relatively flat.
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German astronomer Julius Franz .
