Franz Anselm Schmitt

Franz Anselm Schmitt (born April 18, 1908 in Karlsruhe , † September 20, 1978 in Düsseldorf ) was a German librarian and philologist . From 1957 to 1974 he was director of the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe.

Life

Franz Anselm Schmitt studied German, English, Romance studies and philosophy in Vienna and Freiburg. In 1931 he received his doctorate in Freiburg with the work Die deutsche Heiligenlegende by Martin von Cochem , and in 1932 he passed his state examination. He then completed the library traineeship at the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig and then came to the Badische Landesbibliothek, first as a research assistant, then in 1951 as a library councilor. In 1957 he was appointed director of the Badische Landesbibliothek.

Under his leadership the holdings of the Badische Landesbibliothek increased to over 500,000 volumes. To compensate for the war losses, he set up a book art collection and a binding collection with master bindings of European provenance from the 16th to 19th centuries. He also sharpened the holdings of the Badische Landesbibliothek by increasing the collection of modern manuscripts and autographs. He also acquired the estates of Alfred Mombert , Leopold Ziegler , Emil Strauss , Alexander von Bernus , Albert Haueisen and Max Laeuger . In 1960 he brought the Reinhold Schneider Archive to the Badische Landesbibliothek and in 1969 acquired the partial estate of Joseph Freiherr von Laßberg .

During Schmitt's tenure, the Badische Landesbibliothek, which had been temporarily housed in the General State Archives after the loss of its building in the Second World War , received a newly built library in the Nymphengarten , which he was able to open in 1964.

Schmitt was the founder of the Badische Bibliotheksgesellschaft eV .
