Franz Barnickel (born December 11, 1927 ) is a former German soccer player who played in 1953 for the company sports community (BSG) Chemie Leipzig in the GDR Oberliga , the highest league in GDR soccer .

Athletic career

After the end of the first half of the 1952/53 league season, SV Vorwärts Leipzig recruited numerous regulars from BSG Chemie Leipzig. As a replacement, the BSG could only win players from lower-class sports communities. Among them was the 25-year-old striker Franz Barnickel, who came from the third-class BSG Chemie Schkopau . He was immediately used in the first league game of the second half of the season as a half-left striker and had a successful start in the home game against BSG Motor Jena with his two goals in a 6-0 win. In his starting position, Barnickel stayed in the remaining 17 league games and finally scored five goals. After the end of the 1952/53 season, Franz Barnickel returned to the BSG Chemie Schkopau in the district league after he had played a few friendlies for Chemie Leipzig until July 1953 and did not return to the higher leagues later.
