Franz Braßart

Franz Braßart junior (also: Brassart ; * June 6, 1598 , † August 4, 1671 in Cologne ) was a German businessman and politician of the early modern period . He was multiple mayor of the city of Cologne in the 17th century . He led the government staff a total of seven times.

Life

Braßart was the son of the Cologne councilor and banner owner Franz Braßart senior (1564-1652) and his wife Agnetha (also called Agnes or Agatha) Mertzenich (1554-1653). After a short study at Cologne University , Braßart successfully devoted himself to a commercial career. Braßart was a member of the Gaffel Himmelreich and became its banner owner .

Braßart married into the Jabach merchant family . He was born on February 10, 1630 with Helena. Jabach (1608–1662) married. The couple had nine children. On August 6, 1630 Braßart was elected eighth in St. Jakob (eight-person representation of the community in addition to the church masters).

From 1636 to 1651 Braßart was a member of the Cologne Council. In 1652/53, 1654/55, 1657/58, 1660/61, 1663/64, 1666/67 and 1669/70 he was mayor of the city of Cologne. From May 20, 1658 to June 18, 1670 he also worked as a provisional at the University of Cologne.

Braßart was the owner of the Turmhof in Widdersdorf . Today, Franz-Braßart-Straße , which is named after him, is nearby .

family

The Braßart (Brassart) family came to Cologne from Cambrai in northern France at the end of the 16th century . She traded in Dutch textiles to Milan and Venice .
