Franz Chlum

Franz Chlum (born October 16, 1931 in Brüx , Czechoslovakia ; † May 16, 2013 in Ebersdorf ) was a German conductor and composer .

Life

Chlum came from a family of musicians and studied violin , viola and orchestra conducting at the Weimar Academy of Music from 1947 to 1952 . In the same year he founded the District Culture Orchestra in Saalfeld, which in 1954 became the State Symphony Orchestra Saalfeld . At the age of 23 he received the title of music director . In the 1950s there was an attempt to replace Franz Chlum because of "certain incidents". However, he stayed and led the orchestra until its merger with the Landeskapelle Rudolstadt in 1992 to form the Thuringian Symphony Orchestra Saalfeld-Rudolstadt and developed numerous concert formats for the city of Saalfeld and its district. Chlum also composed marches and works for orchestra. He was also appointed general music director.

Honors

  • Art award of the Gera district
  • In 1996 he was honored with the Saalfeld City Medal.
  • In 2015, Franz-Chlum-Strasse in Saalfeld was named after him.
