After studying law , Franz Dietrich von Ditfurth became a law firm in Wolfenbüttel in 1762 . In 1773 he passed the assessor examination at the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Wetzlar . In 1777 he became a master from the chair of the Wetzlar Masonic Lodge Joseph to the three helmets , which he brought to full bloom. In 1782 he appeared at the Wilhelmsbader Konvent as an opponent of the high-level freemasonry of the Templar Order, because he wanted to free Freemasonry from what he saw as superfluous ballast. For this he was expelled from the Convention.

Then he founded the Eclectic League with his friend Johann Karl Brönner from Frankfurt , with which Freemasonry was decisively reformed. Ditfurth became Provincial Grand Master of this league in 1783, to which numerous lodges joined in the following years or which were founded in Wetzlar.

In addition to Adam Weishaupt and Freiherr Knigge, Ditfurth is also one of the most important Illuminati .
