Franz Esser (born January 20, 1900 in Kiel ; † September 21, 1982 ibid), nicknamed "Seppl", was a German football player . At the beginning of his career he was a pure left winger , later he developed into a feared goalscorer .

Club career

Esser found his way to Holstein Kiel at the age of eleven and made his debut in the first team at the age of 15. In the 1922/23 season, Esser moved to competitor ABTS Bremen, whereupon he was banned from Holstein Kiel "for life". In 1923 he was pardoned again and was allowed to return to his home club. Esser was known for his stamina and was now considered a goalscorer and preparer. For many years he continued his career at Holstein Kiel, which culminated in 1930 when he won the German runner-up championship. In the final of the finals, they just lost to Hertha BSC 4: 5. From 1926 to 1932, the Kiel attacker was in the finals of the German football championship with his team for seven years in a row. He came on 16 missions with six goals. Three times it was enough for championship honors in the north in 1926, 1927 and 1930, four times "Seppl" took part in the finals with the "Störchen" as runner-up in the north. In 1932 Esser ended his career as a player at Holstein Kiel, but was occasionally reactivated during the war and remained with the club until his death as a match committee chairman and coach.

National team

At the age of 17, Franz Esser played for the first time in the jersey of the North German national team. In total, he was used in 34 games. In 1919 (Crown Prince / Federal Cup) and 1925 (Federal Cup) he was twice in the winning teams from Northern Germany. In the German national team he made his debut on July 2, 1922 in the international match in Bochum against Hungary , which went goalless 0-0. Esser was only used in this game because Hans Sutor from Nuremberg had to pass due to an injury. Despite good reviews, Esser was never again considered for a game of the national team.

Specialty

After his active career, Esser remained loyal to his club and served Holstein Kiel as coach and league chairman. He was later made honorary league chairman and was a constant companion of the league team until his death.
