Franz Frey (born January 16, 1948 in Obernburg am Main ) is a German local politician of the SPD .

When he was six, Frey moved from Bavaria to the Unterliederbach district of Frankfurt . In 1971 he became a member of the Frankfurt SPD and moved into the city council in 1989. There he was elected leader of the SPD parliamentary group in 1997. He had previously been politically active as a spokesman for Volker Hauff . In 2000 he was elected chairman of the SPD sub-district in Frankfurt and from 2001 to 2006 he was the magistrate's department for youth and social affairs.

In the 2007 mayor election, Frey ran as an opposing candidate against the incumbent mayor Petra Roth (CDU). His most controversial demand was the introduction of a so-called city toll for non-Frankfurters.
