Franz Gabriel Fiessinger

Franz Gabriel Fiessinger (also: Gabriel Fiesinger; * February 7, 1752 in Offenburg ; † February 2, 1807 in London ) was a German engraver and draftsman.

Life

Born as the son of the Offenburg rope maker Franz Gabriel Fiessinger (1723–1788) and his wife Elisabeth, b. Glattfelder, Fiessinger probably attended the grammar school of the Franciscan order in Offenburg. In 1766 he was enrolled at the “Konvict ad Carolum Borromäum” at the University of Heidelberg, and two years later he was a student at the University of Strasbourg. The claim made in the older literature that Fiessinger was a member of the Jesuit order before 1773 cannot be confirmed by sources. On March 11, 1773 Fiessinger was accepted into the Vienna Academy . In addition to his studies, he completed an apprenticeship (with board and lodging ) with the academic painter Joseph Stöber , the father of Franz Xaver Stöber . During this time he was friends with the sculptor Johann Martin Fischer . In the mid-1780s he worked as a reproduction engraver in Paris. During the French Revolution he stayed in London. From 1798 to 1802 he lived again in Paris, from 1802 back in London, where he died on February 2, 1807.

He made numerous reproduction engravings, especially of personalities of his epoch; the best known is probably the one who portrays Napoleon Bonaparte as an Italian general.
