Franz Gosch

Franz Gosch (born September 27, 1884 in Aichberg near Eibiswald , Styria , † October 9, 1952 in Graz ) was an Austrian librarian and director of the Graz University Library .

Life

Gosch studied Classical Philology, Classical Archeology, Art History and Slavic Studies at the University of Graz , where he received his doctorate in 1910 under Hans Schrader and Richard Cornelius Kukula . In 1913/14 he worked as a research assistant at the archaeological institute of the University of Graz.

In 1914 he joined the university library as an intern for preparatory service, but was drafted into military service just a few weeks later. In May 1921 he returned to the library from Russian captivity. In 1923 he became a lecturer in Russian. From 1934 to 1945 he was director of the Graz University Library. He is a member of the Fatherland Front and the NSDAP . Despite his pronounced National Socialist sentiments, he was known for his fair treatment of subordinates who thought differently. In 1941 he volunteered for the front (where he was first lieutenant), but returned to his post as director of the library the next year. In 1945 he was arrested, but released again in October 1946 at the instigation of his successor Wolfgang Benndorf . Gosch retired in February 1948.
