Franz Josef Attems-Petzenstein

Franz Josef Attems-Petzenstein (born December 19, 1914 in Graz ; † September 18, 2003 ) was an Austrian major general , first chief of staff in Group I in 1956, and later, among other things, military attaché in Great Britain and Sweden.

Life

Franz Josef Attems-Petzenstein was born in 1914 as the son of Viktor Johann Michael Graf von Attems- Petzenstein and Valerie Kirchgaesser von Rheinhoven. He graduated from the Theresianum in 1933 . At the beginning of the Second World War he served as a battery officer in the Artillery Regiment 96 of the 44th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht) , whose location and headquarters was Znojmo in 1939. After the reorganization of the Armed Forces of the Second Republic, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the General Staff to Chief of Staff of Group I in 1956 and immediately had to take over the security of the eastern border of Austria during the Hungarian Revolution in the autumn of that year. From 1960 to 1965 he was a military attaché in Great Britain. In 1962 he became a colonel of the general staff. From 1965 to 1970 he headed the regulations department of the Federal Ministry for National Defense and was promoted to brigadier in 1968. From 1971 to 1975 he served as a military attaché in Sweden, co-accredited in Denmark and Finland . From 1975 to 1979 he was head of the attaché department, most recently as major general.

In the Service historique de la Défense a copy of the diary of the Napoleonic Colonel Michel Menou Baron von Dujon (1776–1841), who switched to the Bourbons in 1814, is listed as a gift from Franz Attems-Petzenstein.
