Franz K. Goerlich

Franz Karl Max Adolf Goerlich (born June 26, 1922 in Frankfurt am Main ; † June 5, 2016 ) was a German geologist and paleontologist who played a central role in the geoscientific scientific organization of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Life

Goerlich studied (after starting in medicine) from 1940 natural sciences and especially geology, mineralogy and zoology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, among others with Rudolf Richter . His studies were interrupted by military service, including on the Eastern Front (he was seriously wounded) and a prisoner of war until 1949. While still studying, which he completed with his dissertation in 1953, he came to micropalaeontology during an internship at a company in oil exploration and was then (1953–1958) petroleum geologist at C. Deilmann Bergbau GmbH Bentheim / Emsland, (1958–1962) in Turkey at Deilmann Petrol Ltd. Sti. Istanbul as chief geologist and head of exploration, most recently as authorized signatory. In addition, he had teaching positions in Münster and Bonn (1958–1959 specializing in “micropalaeontology”). From 1963 he worked for the German Research Foundation as head of Section II C 5 in the promotion of geoscientific research in Bad Godesberg . First he was responsible for geophysics and then for all geosciences. During his time, the construction and reconstruction of the German geodetic and geophysical observatories, as well as the promotion of important international and national projects such as the International Deep Sea Drilling Program, the International Upper Mantle Project or the Continental Deep Drilling Program (KTB) fell. In 1982 he retired, but remained active, for example in the Alfred Wegener Foundation .

He was a member of several national and international advisory bodies for government bodies and associations.

Goerlich was an honorary member of several scientific societies and associations, holder of some high awards and holder of the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

In 1992 he became an honorary member of the Paleontological Society . In 1997 he received the Karl Heinrich Heitfeld Prize . In 2007 he was awarded the Walter Kertz Medal of the German Geophysical Society .
