Franz Olbricht (born March 10, 1842 in Frain , Moravia ; † July 21, 1907 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect and court architect.

biography

Franz Olbricht came to Vienna at a young age, where he attended secondary school and then received practical construction training. He received theoretical lessons from various architects and master builders such as Eduard Frauenfeld, Anton Baumgarten and Josef Zeller. Through determination he managed to work his way up from simple foreman to master builder. In 1873 he found a congenial partner in Ferdinand Dehm , who had completed a similar career. Both founded the joint company Dehm & Olbricht , which was very successful and still exists today. They designed buildings themselves, but were also active in the implementation. By owning your own brick works near Vienna, you could work cheaply. After Olbricht suffered a stroke and was paralyzed from then on, he withdrew from the company and handed it over to his son Franz Olbricht junior. After his death he was highly honored (knight of the Franz Joseph Order ) buried in the Weidlinger Friedhof near Vienna.

meaning

Franz Olbricht built almost exclusively together with Ferdinand Dehm. Their buildings corresponded to historicism , with the initially stricter Renaissance forms gradually giving way to the more decorative neo-baroque. After Otto Wagner's appearance , his design principles were also adopted and from then on neo-baroque buildings with secessionist motifs were built (so-called Viennese Modern School ).
