Franz Pehr Oldenburg

Franz Pehr Oldenburg (* 1740 ; † 1774 in Madagascar ) was a Swedish plant collector .

Live and act

Franz Pehr Oldenburg joined the Danish East India Company as a Swedish soldier .

He accompanied Francis Masson on his first voyage from December 10, 1772 to January 1773 at the Cape of Good Hope and, together with Carl Peter Thunberg, also took part in Francis Masson's second voyage to Port Elizabeth . In 1774 Oldenburg went to Madagascar on Thunberg's recommendation to collect plants. He died there that same year of a vicious fever.

Honor taxon

Christian Friedrich Lessing named the genus Oldenburgia Less in his honor . of the Asteraceae plant family.
