Christian Friedrich Lessing

Christian Friedrich Lessing (born August 10, 1809 in Groß-Wartenberg in the Katzengebirge , Lower Silesia ; † March 13, 1862 in Krasnoyarsk , Siberia ) was a Prussian, German doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Less. "

Life

His father Carl Friedrich Lessing the Elder (1778-1848) was a judicial officer in Breslau, from 1809 Chancellor of the Court of the Free State of Polish Wartenberg . His mother Clementine b. Schwarz (1783–1821) was the daughter of the government chancellor of Prince Hatzfeldt in Trachenberg . Christian Friedrich Lessing was a great-nephew of the famous poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729–1781). One of his brothers was the painter Carl Friedrich Lessing (1808–1880).

In his work "Synopsis generum Compositarum ...", published in 1832, he dealt with the aster family of plants (Asteraceae, formerly called Compositae).

He made research trips through Lapland and Siberia. In 1862 he died working as a city doctor in Krasnoyarsk.

Honors

The plant genus Lessingia Cham. from the daisy family (Asteraceae) was named after the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing , after the painter Carl Friedrich Lessing and after him.
