Constantin Kirchhoff
(Gottlieb Sigismund) Constantin Kirchhoff (born February 15, 1764 in Teterow ; † February 4, 1833 in Saint Petersburg ) was a pharmacist and chemist at the court of the Russian tsar and discoverer of starch sugar .
Constantin Kirchhoff was born in 1764 as the son of a Teterow pharmacist. When he went to Russia after completing his training, he was employed at the imperial court pharmacy. He later became its director. In 1812 he was appointed a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . His activities included the manufacture of cinnabar , the production of unglazed, earthenware, the use of potato flour for baking bread as well as experiments to reduce the flammability of wood. He also developed processes for making brandy and producing grape sugar from starch.
