Erik G. Laxmann

Erik Gustawowitsch Laxmann (* July 27 jul. / 7. August  1737 greg. In Savonlinna , Finland , † January 5 . Jul / 16th January  1796 . Greg on the journey to Tobolsk ) was in Russia active Pastor, professor of Economist, scientist and traveler of Finnish Swedish origin. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Laxm. "

Live and act

In 1764 he became pastor in Kolywan on the edge of the Altai Mountains southwest of Barnaul in Siberia . From there he undertook some research trips to Irkutsk , Lake Baikal and Kjachta on the Chinese border. He collected evidence of the fauna of Siberia; this made him known in scientific circles; In 1770 he was appointed professor of chemistry and economics at the Russian Academy of Sciences . Laxmann was a professor of economics in Saint Petersburg . In 1780 he moved to Irkutsk, where he spent much of the rest of his life. In 1781 he was Bergrat zu Nertschinsk . In 1782 he founded a museum in Irkutsk, which is probably the oldest museum in all of Siberia.

Important works were destroyed by fire in 1812.

Laxmann was married to Yekaterina Ivanovna; they had five sons and a daughter. One of the sons died as a child; the others were named Gustav, Adam , Afernaci and Martin; the daughter's name was Marija.

Honor taxon

In honor of Laxmann, the genus Laxmannia J.R. Forst. & G.Forst. named from the Asteraceae plant family.
