Franz Riklin

Franz Riklin (born September 8, 1941 in Solothurn ) is a Swiss legal scholar specializing in the fields of criminal law , criminal procedure law and press law .

Professional background

Riklin studied law at the Universities of Freiburg im Üechtland and Bern . In 1968 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the protection of personality against interference by radio and television. He worked in the legal department of the Swiss Radio and Television Company (SRG) and worked as a lawyer in Solothurn . In 1977 he completed his habilitation in the field of intellectual property law and was appointed professor for criminal law and criminal procedure law at the University of Freiburg in the same year . From 1980 he worked part-time as a lecturer for media law at the Institute for Journalism and Communication Studies at the University of Freiburg.

Riklin was a member of various expert commissions, e.g. for the revision of the copyright law , the revision of privacy protection, the revision of the general part of the criminal code and the preparation of the code of criminal procedure . For several years he was a member of the Independent Appeals Board for Radio and Television .

Criticism of the Freiburg justice system

Starting in 1996, Riklin made several public statements on alleged abuses in the judiciary of the canton of Friborg . Following an acquittal in favor of the former top drug investigator of the canton of Friborg Paul Grossrieder, some of Riklin's allegations were investigated by two independent experts appointed by the Grand Council of the canton of Friborg. As a result, in 2002 Riklin published a book entitled “Spared from Enlightenment. One untrue and 54 true stories from the judiciary ”, in which various alleged irregularities in the judicial system are summarized.
