Franziska Braun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franziska Braun (* 1885 in Weilburg ; † 1955) was the first woman who was enrolled as a regular student at the Technical University of Darmstadt (THD) "since the winter semester 1908/09" . She studied architecture. In addition, until the end of the First World War , she was the only German, along with five foreign students, who took a diploma examination at the THD. For her, this was a “preliminary examination for building construction” in 1911.

Life

Franziska Braun was born in Weilburg an der Lahn in 1885 as the daughter of the grammar school director Dr. Born brown . She passed the Abitur, which has also made it possible for women to study regularly at the THD since 1908, in Frankfurt am Main at the "Realgymnasium Musterschule ". Realgymnasium meant - in contrast to humanistic grammar schools - that the school placed special emphasis on natural sciences. She also prepared for the Abitur examination in Frankfurt am Main "through secondary school courses for girls (...)".

In the preliminary diploma examination she showed “good and satisfactory grades”. Unlike Jovanka Bončić-Katerinić , the first female graduate engineer in Germany, who regularly finished her studies at the THD in 1913, she did not complete her studies at least there. In "Autumn 1912 (...) her trace is lost." In 1988, it was not yet clear why she left the TH, because of dropping out of studies, marriage or changing university. This was cleared up by the 100th anniversary of women's studies at THD in 2008: "Franziska gave up her studies to marry Heinrich Emil Fliedner and move to Berlin with her husband".

Honors

In 2012, the city of Darmstadt's magistrate decided to name a street on the Lichtwiese campus of the Technical University of Darmstadt after her. The name was changed on October 15, 2013.

price

The TU Darmstadt has awarded the Franziska Braun Prize of the Carlo and Karin Giersch Foundation every two years since 2011 . The prize, endowed with EUR 25,000, honors “best practice models for attracting women to and for research and teaching at TU Darmstadt” and is awarded to organizational units or groups of people at TUD.
