Philipp Braun (pedagogue)

Philipp Braun (born December 24, 1844 in Fulda ; † January 15, 1929 in Hanau ) was a German classical philologist and headmaster.

Life

Philipp Braun was one of the sons of the Hessian court actuary Konrad Braun in Fulda. His oldest brother was Wunibald Braun , the co-founder of Hartmann & Braun . The physicist and Nobel Prize winner Ferdinand Braun was a younger brother.

He attended the Domgymnasium Fulda up to high school graduation in Easter 1863 and studied classical philology at the universities of Göttingen, Marburg and Munich. In Göttingen he became a member of the Corps Hannovera and in Marburg he joined the Corps Teutonia . He passed his exams in 1867 in Marburg, where he in 1869 with his dissertation Observationes criticae et exegeticae in C. Valerii Flacci Argonautica Dr. phil. received his doctorate. He spent his probationary year as a teacher at his old school in Fulda, where in 1869 he received his first full teaching position as the “sixth teacher”. In 1875 Braun was transferred to the Philippinum grammar school in Marburg , where he was promoted to senior teacher in 1878. From Easter 1880 to Easter 1881 he was given leave of absence for a study trip to Italy and Greece. In 1884 Braun was transferred to the Philippinum grammar school in Weilburg . In April 1888 he was introduced to his last position as director of the High State School , then the Royal High School , in Hanau and was director of this school until his retirement in 1919. During this time he wrote numerous publications on the history of the High State School. In 1913 he was awarded the title of Secret Academic Council.

Philipp Braun was married to Marie Scheel from Drammen and had two daughters with her.
