Franciscan monastery Kulmsee

The Franciscan monastery Kulmsee was a branch of the Franciscans in Kulmsee (Polish Chełmża ) in Polish Prussia from 1625 to 1810.

The Franciscan monastery was located at the St. George's Church at the gates of the medieval old town on the road to Kulm ( Chełmno ). There are no building remains.

history

The monastery was consecrated in 1625. It did not belong to the observance movement. St. George's Church was a hospital church, the oldest mention of which is from 1348. It was founded on the initiative of the canon and administrator of Kulmsee Gabriel Provancius (Prowancjusz). The monks ran the hospital.

In 1810 the monastery was dissolved after the area passed to the Kingdom of Prussia . In 1818 the last Franciscan brother still living there died. In 1820 the church was handed over to a Protestant community. It burned down in 1827.
