The Franciscan Stadthagen was a convent of the Franciscan in Schaumburg residence of Stadthagen . It existed from 1486 to 1559. Of the buildings, the Gothic choir of the monastery church has been preserved, which has been used by the Evangelical Reformed community since 1732 .

history

The monastery was founded in 1486 by Count Erich after his participation in the Great Hildesheim Feud (1484–1486). After his death in 1492, Erich was buried under the unfinished monastery church. The consecration took place in 1500. The monastery belonged to the Saxon Franciscan Province of the Holy Cross ( Saxonia ).

The Franciscans set up a library with manuscripts and incunabula, which was extensive for the time . Of the original 85 chain books , 73 have been preserved and are kept in the Bückeburg State Archives - the largest surviving collection of this kind in Germany.

With the introduction of the Lutheran Reformation by Count Otto IV. In 1559, the monastery was closed. Prince Ernst founded the Illustre grammar school in the building in 1610 with the intention of creating a state university in Schaumburg . After their imperial confirmation (1619), he moved them to Rinteln the following year .

In 1732 the Reformed congregation in the Lutheran Stadthagen was allowed to hold services in the former monastery church. The monastery building, which had been vacant for a long time, and the nave of the church were gradually demolished.
