Francis Church (Valletta)
The Franziskuskirche ( Maltese : Knisja ta 'San Franġisk "Church of St. Francis "; English St Francis (of Assisi) Church ) is a Franciscan church in Valletta , the Maltese capital. It is on Republic street and forms a street front with neighboring buildings.
history
It was originally built around 1598. In 1681, the Italian Grand Master of the Order of Malta , the 62nd Grand Master (term of office 1680–1690) Gregorio Carafa (1615–1690) completely redesigned the church building ; his coat of arms adorns the facade .
In the 1920s, the church was expanded to the east with the addition of a domed area and a flat choir, designed by the Maltese architect Emanuel Borg . The church is an important building in Maltese architectural history as its interior was one of the first to be designed in the Baroque style.
Various paintings adorn the church, including works by Mattia Preti (1613–1699) and Giuseppe Calì (1846–1930), whose apotheosis of St. Francis is in the church.
Cultural monument
The church is on the national list of cultural heritage of Malta ( National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands / "National Inventory of Cultural Heritage of the Maltese Islands").
