The women's clinic on Maistraße

The Clinic and Polyclinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics Campus Inner City (former names I. University Women's Clinic and Royal University Women's Clinic and Midwifery School ) is a maternity clinic and an internationally recognized center for the treatment of gynecological cancer in Munich .

history

The teaching hospital in the Maistraße (clinic district in the Isarvorstadt ), which is part of the medical faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , was founded in 1916 by Ludwig III at the instigation of the gynecologist Albert Döderlein . opened as the Royal University Women's Clinic and Midwifery School , as the previous women's clinic at Sonnenstrasse 24-26 no longer met the current hygienic and spatial requirements.

The buildings were planned by the architect and head of the building department of the University Theodor Kollmann in collaboration with Albert Döderlein in the neo-classical style. The building forms a four-wing complex with the neighboring building in Frauenlobstraße with two inner courtyards.

In the 1930s, the women's clinic was one of the best in the world in the field of radiation therapy for gynecological carcinomas.

As part of the implementation of the law to prevent hereditary offspring , over 1,300 women were forcibly sterilized here between 1934 and 1944.

The women's clinic, largely spared from bombing, then served as an alternative location for various other clinics in the post-war years until it became a pure women's clinic again from 1956. Today, in addition to a day clinic for cancer therapy, there is also a maternity clinic with a neonatal intensive care unit.

Shell limestone fountain in the courtyard of the clinic

There is a shell limestone fountain in the clinic courtyard, which was once used to cool the lecture hall via an underground pipe system.

Obstetrics is expected to move into a new building on Ziemssenstrasse in 2021. The building in Maistraße is to be completely renovated as a result.
