Erich Kuss (born June 14, 1927 in Wanne-Eickel ) is a German biochemist and laboratory doctor .

Live and act

Erich Kuß was born in Wanne-Eickel in 1927. After graduating from high school, he became an air force helper in World War II on February 15, 1943 , a laborer in the Reich Labor Service in 1944 , then a paratrooper soldier and in March 1945 a prisoner of war in the US Army , which extradited him to France in the summer of the same year . In October 1948 he was released to his homeland.

The high school diplomas issued in those years before the conscription to the Wehrmacht were not recognized after the war. So Erich Kuß, like all graduates of those years, had to complete a “remedial course” in order to meet one of the requirements for studying. He worked out the financial requirements for studying located underground in coal mine Shamrock III / IV, a coal - mine in Wanne-Eickel . He proved his intellectual prerequisites on October 6, 1950 through an "admission interview" with the then Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt , Hans Wolfgang Kohlschütter . In 1951 he became a member of the Corps Rhenania Darmstadt.

After graduating in chemistry in 1953, he moved to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster , where he also began studying medicine , which he continued, as well as his chemistry studies, a year later at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen . There he passed the main chemistry examination in 1955 and the preliminary medical examination in 1956. His thesis "Preparation of β-carboxy-lysine" and the thesis "The enzymatic oxidation of 3-hydroxy-anthranilic" made kiss under the guidance of Adolf Butenandt the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry , first in Tübingen , from 1956 in Munich , at . Here he was promoted to Dr. rer. nat. PhD . 1960 was kiss the medical state examination in 1963, he received the approbation as a doctor and he became the Dr. med. PhD. The topic of this doctoral thesis was the "inhibition of tissue respiration by estrogens" . In 1971 he was recognized as a specialist in laboratory medicine .

From 1960 onwards, Kuss set up a laboratory for clinical chemistry and biochemistry as a research assistant on behalf of Werner Bickenbach at the I. University Women's Clinic at the University of Munich. He later headed this as academic director and finally as head of department, also under Bickenbach's successor Josef Zander .

With the work "A group of new estrogen metabolites: Isolation, identification and synthesis of the glutathione thioether of 2,3-dihydroxy-estratrienes" , Erich Kuß qualified as a professor in 1969 for clinical chemistry and biochemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and was Appointed private lecturer in the same year . In 1975 he was appointed associate professor . His main scientific areas of work were the acyclic intermediate product of nicotinic acid biosynthesis, the metabolism and mechanism of action of steroidal estrogens , maternofetal and fetomaternal transport in the placenta , the development of immunochemical analysis methods, the validation of clinical-chemical investigations, and rational and rational medical diagnostics. Erich Kuß retired in 1992 .

After his retirement, Erich Kuß dealt more with historical and medical-historical topics, in particular the biography of the gynecologist Heinrich Eymer , who had headed the Munich University Women's Clinic from 1934 to 1954. His publication “A clinic director in political distress” was repeated and criticized from various quarters for being trivialized.

Erich Kuß is with the teacher Gabriele Kuß, geb. Vorster, married, a daughter of Pastor Friedrich Vorster (1903–1982), who was Dean of the Nürtingen church district from 1959 to 1970 and who belonged to the extensive Vorster papermaking dynasty founded by Adolf Vorster . The couple has four children, the opera and theater director Annette Kuss , the violinist Bettina Kuss , the doctor Susanne Kuss and the lawyer Michael Kuss.
