Josef Zander (born June 19, 1918 in Jülich ; † December 1, 2007 in Munich ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician .

Live and act

Josef Zander grew up as the son of the Jülich district judge Karl Zander and his wife Gertrud Zander nee. Müller in strict catholicity. His father died when Josef Zander was eight years old. Soon afterwards, his mother and her son moved to Bad Godesberg . There and in Bonn Josef Zander spent his high school years with some difficulties. In March 1937 he passed the Abitur at the German College in Bad Godesberg. One of his classmates was the later GDR television commentator Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler .

After half a year in the Reich Labor Service, Josef Zander was drafted into the Wehrmacht . From November 1937 he served in the Detmold pilot replacement division and from February 1938 in Flak Regiment 49 in Mannheim-Käfertal. Impaired by the consequences of a serious sports accident, Josef Zander was transferred to Flak Reserve Department 492 at the beginning of the Second World War and, in the course of time, was promoted to Lieutenant of the Reserve.

On January 16, 1941, Zander was able to begin studying medicine in the Luftwaffe's junior medical officer company in Marburg ; his company commander was the Marburg professor for gynecology Ernst Bach . After the Physikum in October 1942, Josef Zander was transferred to the Luftwaffe's junior medical officer company in Heidelberg, which meant that he escaped court martial (Stürmer-Kasten affair).

On April 14, 1943, Josef Zander was transferred to the 2nd Air Force Field Division as a lieutenant to prove his strength at the front. On November 9, 1944, Josef Zander's company was relocated from Heidelberg to Tübingen . There he completed his doctoral thesis "Clinical experience in sulfonamide therapy of infectious diseases (sepsis, meningitis, erysipelas)" and continued his medical studies until he was approved on April 7, 1945. He took command of the company, released the soldiers home and joined the staff of the Tübingen on-site doctor Theodor Dobler . Albert Görres , Zander's friend on Dobler's staff, managed to surrender Tübingen to the French troops on April 19, 1945 without a fight.

As agreed with the emergency license, the medical state examination in Tübingen was made up for in 1946. In the meantime Josef Zander had decided to become a gynecologist. In order to thoroughly prepare for this profession, he learned about science. He initially worked in pathology at the Institute of Erich Letterer , finally from 1947 to 1949 at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, later Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry of Adolf Butenandt and learned there the biochemistry of steroids . Publications from both institutes testify to the success of his scientific work. But he also kept an eye on professional policy. In 1948 he was a founding member of the Marburger Bund .

Josef Zander turned to the field of gynecology as a doctor and worked from 1949 to 1955 as a scientific assistant at the University Women's Clinic in Marburg for the well-known sponsor of endocrinology in gynecology, Carl Kaufmann . With him he made the move to the University of Cologne and also headed the hormone laboratory there. In 1955 , Zander completed his habilitation in the medical field of obstetrics and gynecology with a thesis on "Progesterone in human blood and tissues". From 1956 to 1957 he taught at the invitation of the biochemist Leo T. Samuels at the Steroid Biochemistry Training Institute in Salt Lake City (USA) before returning to the University of Cologne. In 1961 he was appointed adjunct professor there. In 1962 the university gave him a newly created extraordinary position in gynecological endocrinology at the medical faculty. In 1963 he received a call to the chair for obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical University of Heidelberg. He worked there from 1964 to 1969.

In 1970 he was appointed to the chair for obstetrics and gynecology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , combined with the appointment of director of the 1st women's clinic in Maistraße and the midwifery school. Josef Zander worked here until 1987.

The main focuses of his scientific research included:

  • Biochemistry and Physiology of Sex Hormones
  • Gynecological endocrinology
  • Clinical cancer research in gynecology.

In addition, Zander turned to both psychology and social medicine in gynecology and questions of medical social ethics.

In addition to his work as a doctor and scientist, Zander was also an art collector, particularly of avant-garde art from the post-war period.
