Gerhard Martius

Gerhard Martius (born January 31, 1924 in Bonn ; † 1998 in Winsen (Luhe) ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician .

Gerhard Martius was born as the son of Heinrich Martius , from 1926 professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . He completed his schooling in Göttingen and took afterwards in the city be studying medicine on. This was interrupted in the Second World War by military service , so that he could only take his state examination afterwards. Martius completed his clinical training first at the Aarau Cantonal Hospital , then at the University Children's Clinic in Zurich , and later at the Women's Clinic of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen under Werner Bickenbach . After moving from Bickenbach to the women's clinic at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , Martius followed him in the same year. Gerhard Martius worked there until 1967, completed his habilitation in 1955 and was appointed adjunct professor in 1967.

In the same year Martius took over the management of the gynecological clinic of the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin . He headed the clinic until 1988. Then he moved to Lower Saxony , where he headed the women's clinic at the General Hospital in Celle . He then lived in Winsen until his death in 1998, where he continued to work as a textbook author and editor.

Gerhard Martius' scientific interest was primarily in obstetrics. He made a particular contribution to training midwives . In 1962 he published his standard textbook for midwives. Later he was editor of the magazine Die Midwife and the library of the midwife . He also continued his father's textbooks after his death in 1965.

Martius was involved in professional politics in the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG), of which he was secretary for over six years. From 1967 he was also active in the Northwest German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics.

Gerhard Martius died in 1998. His son, Joachim Martius (* 1952), also became a gynecologist.

Honors

Gerhard Martius was an honorary member of the DGGG, the Berlin and the North German Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1988 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class .
