Hans Wolfgang Kohlschütter (born July 19, 1902 in Strasbourg ; † January 8, 1986 in Darmstadt ) was a German chemist who was a professor at the TH Darmstadt and who dealt with colloid chemistry .

Life

He was the son of the chemistry professor in Strasbourg (and later in Bern) Volkmar Kohlschütter and, like him, came from a well-known Saxon family. Kohlschütter studied chemistry in Bern, Dresden and Munich and was in Bern Fritz Bruno Ephraim with the work in 1926 For the chemistry of solids: observations on forms of mercuric iodide and sulfur doctorate . He then worked with Hermann Staudinger in Freiburg im Breisgau and completed his habilitation there in 1930. At that time he was working on macromolecular chemistry , but then turned to colloid research and the topochemistry research area introduced by his father in 1919 . After completing his habilitation at Princeton University, he conducted research (on heterogeneous catalysis) and became a private lecturer in 1934 and associate professor at the TH Darmstadt in 1939. He was also a member of the National Socialist German Lecturer Association (NSDDB) from 1941 to 1944. In 1943 he became a full professor for inorganic and analytical chemistry and was director of the Eduard Zintl Institute, which he co-founded .

After the membership ban was lifted, Kohlschütter joined the NSDAP on May 1, 1937 . In the 1940s he headed the Darmstadt / Gau Hessen-Nassau district group of the Association of German Chemists (VDCh).

From 1951 to 1953 he was rector of the TH Darmstadt.

In addition to the above-mentioned areas of work, he particularly examined fine dispersions and porous solids and developed separation columns based on silica gel for dissolved ions.

From 1961 to 1969 he was chairman of the supervisory board and from 1964 to 1977 he was a member of the shareholders' council of the pharmaceutical company Merck KGaA .

Kohlschütter died in Darmstadt at the age of 83. His first marriage since 1930 with Lenelore Sprenger and his second marriage since 1951 with Margarete Kohlschütter born. Groos (1921–2015) married.
