The Women's Museum Merano on Kornplatz in the center of Merano ( South Tyrol ) is supported by the Women's Museum Association and is located in the former Clarissian Monastery . It is the coordination office of the International Association of Women's Museums (IAWM) .

Focus

In its permanent exhibition, the museum shows the history of women of the 19th and 20th centuries embedded in the cultural-historical context. The exhibits from the museum's collection include clothing, accessories, and everyday objects. The exhibition aims to make female realities visible, which are often ignored in general historiography.

In the special exhibition hall, exhibitions are shown that deepen historical topics or also address current socio-political issues.

Permanent exhibition of the women's museum

The museum sees itself as a place of encounter, of learning and, with its constantly growing specialist library, as a place of reading and research. The task of raising awareness of women-specific topics is carried out in the sense of adult education through lectures, seminars and conferences on current topics.

history

The Women's Museum in Merano was founded in 1988 by Evelyn Ortner . In 1993 the Women's Museum Association was founded. The seat was relocated to the former Poor Clare Monastery on Merano's Kornplatz in 2011 . Thanks to the support of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the municipality of Merano , an innovative and modern museum has been set up on two floors.

International networking

In 2008 the first international women's museum congress took place in Merano. Since then, the Merano Women's Museum has been the coordinating body for the International Association of Women's Museums (IAWM) and today networks over 30 women's museums and initiatives worldwide. Shirin Ebadi , the 2003 Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is the godmother of this network. The Merano Women's Museum is therefore already firmly embedded in the local and international community of museums.
