Marathon des Sables
The Marathon des Sables (MDS) is a demanding stage - ultra marathon that has been organized in the Moroccan Sahara by the French Patrick Bauer since 1986 . The 230-kilometer route is redefined for each run. There are six stages in seven days: five stages between 20 and 40 km and one stage of around 80 km (2009: 91 km), which the runners have to complete in one go in just under two days (40 hours).
conditions
The runners carry personal items and provisions with them for the entire race. The organizers only provide the daily water (about nine liters, depending on the length of the stages) and an open tent. The runners must be equipped with minimal survival equipment such as sleeping bags, snakebite kits and 2000 kcal energy per day. The running route, which changes annually, generally consists of rocky plains, dry river beds and sand dunes, with only occasional small villages being crossed. The temperature reaches 40 ° C and more during the day, while it can drop to 5 ° C at night. The run is limited to approx. 800 participants. The only requirement for runners is robust health as verified by a medical exam. The oldest finisher to date is Claude Compain, who in 2000, at the age of 77, finished 563rd (out of 570 finishers) with a time of 69:58:38.
A dramatic incident occurred in 1994 when the Italian participant Mauro Prosperi got lost in a sandstorm and was only found by nomads in Algeria after nine days, emaciated by 15 kg and 200 km from the course. In 2007, Bernard Julé passed away in the early morning after the night stage despite his excellent health - he was among the top 50.
Results
Since the distances vary annually due to the different routes, the times are only partially comparable.
