This list of women's museums includes museums that primarily focus on women's history and culture and women in art .

Overview of existing lists

There are lists from different institutions that bring together women's museums worldwide:

  • The International Association of Women's Museums (IAMW): An international umbrella organization that connects women's museums worldwide and represents their interests. Sifting through new museums and initiatives is one of the association's basic tasks, which is why the list is updated frequently.
  • She Culture: A two-year project from 2013 to 2015 under the EU culture program. In the course of an analysis and evaluation of gender politics in the cultural field at the European and national level, an investigation of women's museums was carried out, which also contains a list from 2014.
  • Istanbul Women's Museum , Turkey: Meral Akkent has compiled a list that is also updated regularly.
  • Women's Museum Chile (virtual): also made a list.

The number of women's museums varies constantly: the IAWM lists around 80 museums worldwide, 14 of which are virtual museums such as the women's museums in Costa Rica, Istanbul or Ireland. There are 30 initiatives for women's museums in different countries, most of them are in Europe (as of September 2015). At the same time, other museums had to close, often for financial reasons, as the location was withdrawn from them (Gambia) or burned down in the civil war (Central Africa).
