The women's self-help after cancer eV (FSH) is a German patient organization with the purpose of catching, informing and accompanying people diagnosed with cancer . The FSH has a dense network of regional groups across Germany, an internet forum, telephone advice and network offers for young women with cancer and men with breast cancer.
The German Cancer Aid is the patron of the FSH and promotes the non-profit association as part of the partnership to improve the supply network for people suffering from cancer in the Federal Republic. The FSH is a member of the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Selbsthilfe e. V. (BAG), in the German working group self-help groups e. V. and in the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband eV
history
The women's self-help after cancer eV was founded in 1976 on the initiative of Ulla Schmidt and 15 other women who had breast cancer . They felt left alone with the shock of the diagnosis and the consequences of the therapy . Her concern was to improve the situation for breast cancer patients and to get the subject of cancer out of the taboo zone in the spirit of doctor Mildred Scheel . They acted according to the motto: "Catching - informing - accompanying", which has continued to apply to the FSH ever since.
As early as 1979, the women's self-help after cancer eV had grown to an organization with five regional associations and 90 groups, the German Cancer Aid began to provide financial support through donations. New regional associations and numerous other groups were founded. An annual average of over 35,000 cancer patients are cared for with information, advice and factual information.
In 2010 the BRCA network emerged from a group established by the FSH in August 2008 , which is dedicated to familial (“hereditary”) breast cancer and ovarian cancer - caused in particular by the genes BRCA1 and BRCA1.
Board and membership
The federal executive board is elected for four years and works on a voluntary basis . Sylvia Brathuhn, who has been a trainer for palliative care teams for years, has been chairwoman since 2016. The vice chairman is Burkhard Lebert. The six-member new board includes u. a. Hans-Helge Bartsch, Director of the Clinic for Tumor Biology at the Freiburg University Medical Center . Almost all of the members of the executive board have developed cancer themselves (affected person competence). You have completed the FSH qualification program.
In the women's self-help according to cancer eV no membership fees are levied, because members are only those who take on a voluntary role as group leader, their deputy or cashier. You do not have to become a member to participate in the group meetings of the FSH.
Anyone with cancer or their relatives can contact an FSH support group, regardless of age, gender or type of cancer. The questioners do not have to be or become a member of the FSH. The group leader is elected every four years by the group participants.
financing
The financial basis of women's self-help according to cancer eV consists essentially of grants through third-party funds. Funding from donations from the German Cancer Aid totaled 850,000 euros in 2015.
Private donations and inheritances are advertised. In order to preserve independence and neutrality in the interests of cancer patients, donations or sponsorship offers from commercial enterprises, especially the pharmaceutical industry , are not accepted by the FSH. Membership fees are not charged.
Help for men with breast cancer
For the breast cancer month of October 2018, the German Cancer Aid and the women's self-help after cancer jointly called for more help for men with breast cancer. According to current surveys, breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in Germany with around 72,600 new cases per year, explained the aid organizations. Almost nobody thinks of men when it comes to this topic, although according to a survey by the Robert Koch Institute (Berlin) around 700 of them develop this type of tumor every year. "The public awareness that men can also get breast cancer is low," criticized Krebshilfe CEO Gerd Nettekoven . This also applies to science, as little research is being done in this area. He encouraged the men to find out about possible breast cancer diseases from specialist organizations such as the network “Men with Breast Cancer eV”.
Information work
In addition to the supraregional advisory work, the FSH provides written information. The factual information can be ordered free of charge or accessed on the Internet . This also applies to the magazine “perspektiven” of women's self-help. It appears four times a year. An essential part of the booklet includes background information on the topic of cancer and tips for those affected. It also reports on developments in the medical-nursing field and in health policy .
