Fred Haltiner was a half-brother of the writer Walter Matthias Diggelmann . He originally wanted to be a writer too, but initially worked as an insurance inspector for five years. He then decided to become an actor and went to the Zurich drama school. Here he had his final breakthrough when he played alongside Steve McQueen in Le Mans in 1971 . He also played in many German television series such as Der Kommissar . In 1973 Fred Haltiner committed suicide. In his autobiographical novel Filipinis Garten , Walter Matthias Diggelmann (in the novel he bears the pseudonym "Stephan") describes the steep career, the unhappy love affairs and, in his opinion, the suicide of his half-brother Fred Haltiner (in the novel he bears the pseudonym "Josef") ). In her posthumously published biography "The donkey lost you in a gallop" (chapter "Greek tragedy", p. 193 ff), the actress Ellen Schwiers (1930–2019) revealed her passionate love affair with Fred Haltiner, which took place during the filming of the TV The multi-part series "The Red Scarf" started and for which she wanted to leave her husband and their children. Haltiner's excessive consumption of alcohol and the resulting change in personality prompted her to give him the choice of either renouncing alcohol or giving up the relationship with her. A few hours after this phone call, Haltiner put an end to his life. Fred Haltiner (Christian name: Alfred Haltiner) was buried in the cemetery of the municipality of Rhäzüns, Grisons.
