The Fred Hartman Bridge spans the Houston Ship Channel between Baytown and La Porte in Harris County , Texas , USA . It leads the eight-lane State Highway 146 over the canal and is also the last bridge over the canal before Trinity Bay and the Gulf of Mexico .

The bridge replaces the two-lane Baytown Tunnel , opened in 1953 , which was closed and dismantled in 1995 after the bridge was completed to make room for the Houston Ship Channel to deepen to 13.7 m.

The Fred Hartman Bridge has a headroom of 54.8 m (178 ft ), which is around one meter higher than the Sam Houston Ship Channel Bridge .

It consists of two side-by-side two-hip and 674.8 m long cable-stayed bridges , each supporting one of the four-lane and 23.77 m (78 ft) wide directional lanes. The spans of the main openings are 381 m (1250 ft), those of the secondary openings 146.9 m.

The two diamond-shaped pairs of reinforced concrete pylons are 129.84 m (426 ft) high and overlook the road by 81 m. Your arms merge at the points of contact of the diamonds. The arms have rectangular hollow cross-sections of 2.13 m in the transverse direction and 7.30 m in the longitudinal direction.

The ropes arranged in the fan system run in PE pipes and were grouted with mortar. The tubes are wrapped with UV-resistant yellow adhesive tape.

The superstructure is a composite structure consisting of two outer steel longitudinal girders and regular cross girders. The steel came from Mexico, South Africa and Texas, which resulted in significant delays. The steel girders are screwed together, as welding was not common on construction sites in the USA, at least back then. Precast concrete slabs 20 cm thick were attached to the steel girders and mortared in the joints. A 10 cm thick wear and protective layer was applied to this, as the bridge is used by many trucks loaded with chemicals.

The ramp bridges consist of prefabricated prestressed concrete beams . The entire structure is 4185 m long.

The bridge was opened on September 27, 1995.

The composite construction offered by the entrepreneur as an alternative was designed by Greiner, Inc. together with Leonhardt, Andrä and Partner . A wind speed of 50 m / s (180 km / h) was used as a basis. The bridge has since survived several hurricanes without damage.
