Fred Marriott (born December 31, 1872 in Needham , Massachusetts , † April 28, 1956 ) was an American racing driver .

Record 1906

In 1906 he set a new automobile speed record on the Daytona Beach Road Course near Ormond Beach with the Stanley Rocket Steamer , which was powered by a steam engine . At 205.5 km / h , he was the first person to go faster than 200 km / h (127.659 mph ). The steam car country speed record is the longest established officially recognized record. The speed over the kilometer was measured in 18.4 seconds (195.65 km / h), only this record was officially recognized.

Fred Marriott tried to break the 1907 record, but got into a rut. The car took off in the air and broke in half on impact. Marriott was injured and refrained from further attempts.

Fred Marriott was 83 years old.

History of the record

In 2004, a British team called Inspiration stepped up to build a new steam car that they wanted to break the record with. But it wasn't until 2009 that the British Charles Burnett III succeeded. to set a new record with a top speed of 224 km / h.
