Freddy Derwahl

Freddy Derwahl (born November 16, 1946 in Eupen ) is a Belgian writer and journalist from the German-speaking community of Belgium .

Life

After graduating from the College Patronné in his hometown, Derwahl studied literature, sociology and journalism at the Universities of Leuven , Aachen and Paris . After his studies he became a journalist and Belgium correspondent for the Aachener Volkszeitung .

After a few years of political activity, he became attaché for Ostbelgien questions in Brussels in 1972 in the cabinet of Minister of Culture Charles Hanin . In 1975 Freddy Derwahl came to the Belgian Radio and Television (BHF) , where he became head of the culture department in 1986. A sabbatical year followed in the American Trappist Abbey of Genesee .

He wrote poems and travel stories for various newspapers, including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Die Zeit . In a review of Eine Reise durch Ostbelgien, Die Zeit wrote : “Derwahl writes of the arduous search for fulfillment, the adventure of loneliness, of greed for life and the burden of lust”.

Derwahl has been a freelance writer since 2007. In 2008, a private study visit at the Lateran University in Rome followed . Freddy Derwahl is a member of the international association of authors PEN
