The Aachener Zeitung ( AZ ) is a daily newspaper published in Aachen . It appears together with the Aachener Nachrichten in the newspaper publisher Aachen . Together they have a sold circulation of 89,717 copies, a decrease of 45.2 percent since 1998. The newspaper is printed in the Rhenish format .
history
The AZ was initially founded as the Aachener Volkszeitung in 1946 by Jakob Schmitz, Josef Hofmann , Albert Maas and Johannes Ernst in Aachen and has existed as the Aachener Zeitung since March 6, 1996 .
The “Aachener Volkszeitung” appeared for the first time on February 22nd, 1946. The circulation was 53,000 copies. It was the first free newspaper in post-war Germany , while its sister paper , the Aachener Nachrichten , had appeared since the beginning of 1945 after the American occupation of Aachen. The first edition was published on January 24, 1945. The number of copies was subject to the occupiers' regulations and was increased to 99,600 copies by the end of 1946. Until September 1, 1949, the newspaper appeared two to three times a week, from this date on every working day. The Aachener Nachrichten carries the historical license no. 1.

The circulation of the Aachener Zeitung is shown together with the Aachener Nachrichten . The two newspapers have lost a lot of circulation in recent years . The number of copies sold has fallen by an average of 3.5% per year over the past 10 years. Last year it decreased by 5.7%. It is currently 89,717 copies. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 86.5 percent.

Editor-in-chief of the Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten is Thomas Thelen. The local editorial staff has been significantly thinned out in recent years.
Awards
Editors of the Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten have received several awards for special journalistic achievements:
- Media Prize Development Policy 1997: Manfred Kutsch, Little Hands, Crooked Backs
- Theodor Wolff Prize 2007, Marlon Gego, At the end of the illusion .
- The two AZ editors Oliver Schmetz and Stephan Mohne were nominated for the Henri Nannen Prize in the Investigation category in 2010 (reporting on the spectacular escape from the Aachen prison).
- The two AZ / AN editors Oliver Schmetz and Stephan Mohne won the Nannen Prize in the first-time Investigation Local category in 2019 for their series of articles about dubious salaries of staff councils.
- Both newspapers have received the European Newspaper Award several times , most recently in 2012.
